Viktualienmarkt covers roughly 22,000 square metres of central Munich and has never had a roof, a gate, or an entrance fee. It began as an overflow: in 1807 Maximilian I Joseph moved the city's produce trade off Marienplatz, two streets south, and the stalls never left.
