The market was an emergency measure. In 1807 Maximilian I Joseph ordered Munich's grain and produce trade moved off the overcrowded Marienplatz, and the new square by the Heiliggeistkirche was meant to be temporary. It never moved back.
Two centuries later the Viktualienmarkt covers roughly 22,000 square metres in the middle of the Altstadt, and a viktualienmarkt gourmet food tour still traces the same stall lines drawn in the Napoleonic era.
