The market was born of a decree: in 1807 Maximilian I Joseph ordered Munich's produce trade out of Marienplatz and onto the open ground beside the Heiliggeistkirche, where it has stayed ever since. What began as a grain and vegetable overflow now covers roughly 22,000 square metres and holds around 140 stalls.
Few European city-centre markets have kept their ground so stubbornly.

The Biergarten at the centre, shaded and seating roughly a thousand, rotates its breweries through the year so no single house dominates. Beside it the Schrannenhalle, rebuilt in 2005 on the footprint of the 1853 iron grain hall, carries the market's commerce indoors.
Munich's other landmarks announce themselves; this one does not. The Frauenkirche towers and the Neues Rathaus glockenspiel are three minutes north, yet the market keeps a lower, working register — crates, scales, chalkboards, the smell of smoked fish near the Schmalznudel corner. It is a food market that happens to sit inside a tourist district, not a tourist attraction dressed as a market.
